Author: Fahmi Rizwansyah

Indonesia is a large country and contains rich in cultural diversity with hundreds of different ethnic groups. Each group has a unique tradition, culture and art, making Indonesia the country to attract foreign tourists, scientists, theater, and art. Each tribe also has a tradition and the local language, besides Bahasa Indonesia, official language. Although in one island, like Sumatra, Java, Sulawesi, Maluku, Papua and others, local language is often different from village to village. Diversity such as language, is very interesting for those interested in linguistics. Linguists interested in historical linguistics, morphology, sociolinguistics, language shift and language attrition will find Indonesia a land that provides them with much material to work with.

Indonesian has the largest Muslim population in any country in the world but also a country of diverse religion. Including Hindu, Buddhist, Catholic and Protestant. In addition there Kaharingan, the Dayak people in Kalimantan has been obtained from law officials. This religious and traditional beliefs, together they provide syncretism interesting for students who study religion.

Indonesia is a developing country with rich natural resources and human resources and economic potential, especially the market that promise, so for the sake of the country, international economists, plant and animal experts, and development workers.

The Indonesian archipelago of more than 17,000 islands, inhabited by two species of flora and fauna of different origin. Especially in the west belongs to the Indo-Malayan realm, while to the east Pacific and Australian realms. Although the country covers only 1.3 percent of Earth's land, but here is home to some of the most spectacular wildlife and extraordinary - both plants and animals. Indonesia also has a high biodiversity: ten percent of the world's flowering plant species, 12 percent of the world's mammal species, 16 percent of all reptile and amphibian species, 17 percent of all 2008 bird species and more than 25 percent of fish species.

Recent research shows that 40 million Indonesians are directly dependent on biodiversity. Of these, 12 million people of native (indigenous) people who live in and around the forest. Environment in the forest for centuries, the community has developed a policy of sustainable exploitation of resources - they acknowledge that the continued existence depends on the availability of food to hunt and gather. But off late it has emerged as the major tourist attraction of the South Goa. It is the perfect place for those who seek solitude in their holidays. There is long mile of virgin territory comprising of soft sands, shining sun and music of the waves. Just grab your favorite book and tie the swing net in between coconut tree and laze around in the calmness. This is place where first revolt against Portuguese erupted.

Benaulim Beach:

This is the place to get closure to the nature and remain totally untouched. It is one special place for Christians as it the birth place of venerable Father Joseph Vaz. The best thing about Benaulim is its still an undiscovered beach. Unlike other beaches commercialization has not creped yet. This is the best place for sun bathing and getting tanned. One can go for swimming too. Though its quite beach during evening and weekend it can get crowded with locals pouring in. The main attraction of this beach is dolphin spotting trips. Down or Synthetic? Choosing the right Sleeping Bag

Author: Frank McGoldrick

Sometimes it's tough having too many choices. For example, when I first started shopping for a new sleeping bag I was overwhelmed by the selection and styles that were available.   There were warm weather, cold weather, ultra-light, down, synthetic, mummy and rectangular sleeping bags.  So I went online and did a little research to learn everything I could about each style.  After some analysis I was able to choose a sleeping bag that made sense for my needs.  To save you some time, I have written down a few tips that helped me make my decision.

To begin, you will see sleeping bags broken into two groups, down and synthetic.  The biggest advantage for down sleeping bags is that they are typically very light and goose down is an excellent insulator.  The biggest problem with a down sleeping bag is that if they get wet, it will take forever to dry and the goose down will lose its insulating benefits.  On the flip side, synthetic sleeping bags can get wet because they can dry quickly.  In addition, synthetic sleeping bags are typically less expensive than down sleeping bags. The only real problem with synthetic sleeping bags is that they will be typically heavier than a down sleeping bag.

In my case, the right choice was a down sleeping bag.   We typically hike to our campsite and weight was one of the most important factors in making my choice.  I wanted to keep the overall weight of my backpack as light as possible so I started my search for ultra-light sleeping bags.  I eventually found a great "mummy" style sleeping bag that only weighed a little over 2 pounds.  One footnote, "mummy" style sleeping bags can make you feel a little claustrophobic. They are tapered and can be a little snug.  It was a little strange for me at first, but I got used to it.  You may want to keep this in mind if you have issues with close quarters. If this is an issue with you, consider looking for a rectangular sleeping bag.  It will probably be a little heavier than a "mummy" style sleeping bag, but it will give you more room to move around.

Also, make sure you find out the temperature rating of the sleeping bag.  Generally, sleeping bags are rated as: 3-Season (+10 degrees to +32 degrees), winter (-10 and below), summer (+32 and higher) and cold weather (+10  to -10).  And remember, it makes sense to choose a bag that is rated a little bit lower than you will need.  A lower rated sleeping bag will keep you warm if the temperature really drops down on a cold night. Plus, you can always unzip the bag if you need to cool off.  The down sleeping bag that I chose was rated for three seasons.  We usually camp during the spring and summer so I didn't need to spend the extra money on a sleeping bag rated for the winter or the cold weather.

My last point is to check the length of the sleeping bag.  This is especially important to those of us who are a little taller and need more room.  Plus, by checking the length you will make sure your sleeping bag will fit in your camping tent. The last thing you want is to get a sleeping bag that is longer than the length of your tent.

Again, just take the time to do some research before you buy your sleeping bag.  There are a tremendous number of sleeping bag brands and styles. You can start looking at your local outdoor store, but you might save some time by shopping online first. It will take you less time and you should be able to save some money as well.   I hope this article can help you on your sleeping bag purchase.   See you around the campsite!

The Best Way to Travel

Author: Amelia Stenson

The best way to travel is really dependent upon the person who is going on holiday and the destination they have chosen.

The more independent, adventurous personality will, in all likelihood, opt for the flexibility of a self drive tour, whereas the individual who prefers to have everything cut and dried and taken care of on their behalf will possibly choose either a guided or group tour, depending on how sociable they are.

‘Flexi-drives’ for the adventurous

In truth, self drive tours are really ‘flexi-drives’ where the intrepid journeyman can add, modify, adapt and exchange virtually any aspect of their itinerary, including preferred routes, activities and even accommodation.

There is absolutely no rigidity to the sojourn but at the same time they will have tapped into the extensive knowledge and local know-how of dedicated tour operators who will have assisted them every step of the way, from planning the itinerary with the client’s continual feedback to the point of meeting and greeting them at the airport to hand over the hired car keys.

As long as the destination is a relatively safe one with suitable road networks and a reasonable infrastructure, the self drive tour option is arguably the best way to experience an African safari for some.

Advantages of self drive tours:

  • Tailor-made itinerary
  • Routes and departure times that suit the client, not the group
  • Freedom to ‘shop till you drop’ en route, as there are no baggage constraints except for the size of the boot
  • A safety net in place in case of emergencies or any other problems
  • The ability to drive off the beaten track for unique sight-seeing; a big plus on a Big 5 safari
  • No dodgy travelling companions

Disadvantages of self drive tours:

Undoubtedly the cost. Rental cars and petrol come at a premium these days and the tour operator will not have the benefit of ‘volume’ buying that generally keeps the costs of accommodation and transport much lower in the group scenario.

Escorted or guided tours are the best of both worlds

Escorted or guided tours are the best of both worlds. The client still has all the benefits of privacy and flexibility, yet at the same time can hand over the reins to the local guide, who will generally act as a driver too.

The one major drawback of an escorted tour is that it can prove to be rather expensive. The client and his party will not only have to fork out for the guide’s expertise but all his or her meals, accommodation and entry fees to national parks or any other excursions too.

Group tours offer security, companionship and little effort

Group tours are possibly the ideal mode of travel for single people, females and senior citizens. The group offers security, companionship and comfort as well as the ideal opportunity to make new friends. It is also the cheapest way to travel purely because of volume purchasing.

Disadvantages of group tours are:

  • Stuck with that group of people and an inflexible itinerary
  • Often not enough time to enjoy any one place
  • Can sometimes miss out on cultural experiences if too busy interacting with the group
